Electric Vehicle Service in Toronto, ON

Whether you’re one of the millions of electric vehicle drivers already on the streets, or you’re considering getting your first EV, you might be wondering what goes into maintaining these types of cars. Fortunately, the expert service department here at Downtown Ford know what they’re doing when it comes to tuning up and repairing electric vehicles. Read on to learn more about how you can keep your new EV on the road for as long as possible.

How Often Should I Service My EV?

First, the good news. EV vehicles require less regular maintenance than a regular gas or diesel engine. EV drivetrains have fewer moving parts, and thus there’s less chance for something to go wrong. Thus, they cost less in repairs and maintenance over the lifespan of the vehicle. Even so, they aren’t maintenance free, and should probably be looked at by a qualified service technician as regularly as their gas-powered cousins.

How Do I Care for My Battery?

The most expensive part to replace in your EV vehicle is the battery. This can be a very costly replacement, so you want to take care of it as best you can. Fortunately, there are a few easy things you can do which might help extend the lifespan of your EV’s battery. First off, try not to drain or charge it completely – keeping it charged between 20% and 80% at all times is a good practice for daily use. Second, don’t rely solely on high capacity Level 3 charging stations. These stations do provide super-fast recharges, but they send such a high amount of current into the battery that it can cause degradation.

What About My Tires?

Two things about EVs is they’re a bit heavier, and they provide instant torque to your tires. These both combine to add extra wear to the tires, and they may need to be replaced a bit more frequently. Regular tire rotations will, of course, prolong the life of your tires.
